THE DEREK SHEELY FOUNDATION and Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center have joined forces to develop a better understanding of concussions and other traumatic brain injuries in order to prevent these events from occurring in the future. Sports medicine physicians from Penn State Hershey and experts from Penn State’s biomechanical engineering department have agreed to collaborate with THE DEREK SHEELY FOUNDATION and Frostburg State University to conduct a Case Study on Derek Sheely’s accident to discover lessons that can be shared with athletes, coaches, and parents to increase awareness, prevention, and treatment. This Case Study is important because there are nearly 4 million sports-related concussions every year, one every 8 seconds. The study will include a review of Derek’s medical records, accident video, and helmet.
THE DEREK SHEELY FOUNDATION, Penn State Hershey, and Frostburg University are in the process of assembling an integrated team of experts to conduct the Case Study. Phase 1 is planned to begin in Spring 2012 and will include a case report that will be shared nationally and internationally in order to prevent the devastating effects of concussions and brain injuries from impacting other children and families.
THE DEREK SHEELY FOUNDATION is committed to “Leading the Way” towards concussion and brain injuries awareness and research.
